Hazardous driving conditions after historic winter storm, tips to stay safe if you must hit the roads
BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - Record snowfall fell from New Orleans to Pensacola as a winter storm swept across the Gulf South, including most of South Mississippi being impacted.
While the winter precipitation has given way to sunny skies, freezing temperatures overnight have caused further dangerous driving conditions.
The snow-packed and icy road conditions will continue throughout the day and multiple bridges in the area remain closed.
Residents are urged to keep their automobiles parked and stay off the roads as crews with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) work to clear the roadways.
However, for those motorists who can’t avoid getting out on the roads, MDOT has released the following tips for driving in the snowy, icy conditions:
- Buckle up
- Slow down
- Allow more space between vehicles
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding and never slam on the brakes
- Use headlights
- Avoid using cruise control
- Avoid distractions such as talking and texting on a phone
- Stay alert and watch out for other drivers
MDOT also suggests keeping a winter weather car kit prior to – and during – winter weather emergencies to help you get to your destination safely.
According to the state transportation agency, the kit should include the following:
- Windshield scraper
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Jumper cables
- First aid kit
- Blankets
- Phone charger
- Water and snacks
- Emergency flares and/or reflectors
WLOX will keep you updated on road and bridge closures as the information becomes available.
