Manager Mike Guerrero liked what he saw Saturday night before 3,203 fans at MGM Park. His Shuckers ended a four game losing streak thanks to an overall team effort.
A few individuals stood out. First baseman Jacob Nottingham came through with a double and 3 run homer to help propel the Shuckers to victory. He belted a double in the bottom of the third inning that plated a run. He added that 3 run blast in the 5th inning for his fourth home run this season.
Starting pitcher Corbin Burnes (W, 3-1) pitched 5 innings, gave up 1 run on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts to post the win.
Nick Ramirez relieved Burnes. In 3 innings he didn't give up a run, on 2 hits and 1 strikeout. Jorge Lopez pitched the 9th inning and the Barons failed to get a hit and Lopez had a strikeout.
The Shuckers are 46 and 46 overall and are attempting to win the second half of the Southern League South Division. Pensacola won the first half of the South Division and if the Blue Wahoos were to win the second half, the Shuckers are in good shape right now. The team with the best overall record would secure the other playoff berth.
There's still a long way to go, but things are looking up for the Shuckers who battle the Barons 5:05 Sunday evening at MGM Park. Birmingham leads the series 2 games to 1.
Mason Robbins of Birmingham had a hit in four trips to the plate. He drove home the Barons only run with a single into left field in the top of the fourth inning. Robbins played his high school baseball at George County and his college baseball at Southern Miss.
