VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) - A well known drug and alcohol recovery center in Vancleave is enjoying the support of a new business partner.
Bluff Creek Nursery donates all the proceeds from its plant sales to the neighboring Home of Grace.
The nursery also provides on the job training for men enrolled in the Christian recovery program.
Bluff Creek Nursery covers five acres next door to the Home of Grace. You'll find colorful flowers and hanging baskets, along with an assortment of ornamental grasses. What sets the nursery apart is the workers.
"The men here, they love it. They call it therapy. They like to get out here and work in the plants," said manager Travis Brown.
Men who tend to the nursery plants are recovering drug and alcohol abusers.
"A program for the Home of Grace to take the men and bring them in here and let them work. While they're here, I counsel with them and we work together and work through their needs and everything," says Brown.
Kenneth Cupps from Pennsylvania came to South Mississippi for a job. Problems with alcohol led him to the Home of Grace, where he found the Holy Spirit and landed a job on the nursery crew.
"I love this part of it. Because I'm a tree surgeon by trade and I'm used to working with plants. And I enjoy this work," says Cupps, "It gives you the ability to grow, communicate with others."
The men receive counseling at the nearby recovery center, while the nursery job instills a work ethic. Those who complete the program are recommended for employment at other area nurseries.
Brandon Roberts says Bluff Creek Nursery and the Home of Grace provided him a life changing partnership.
"The Home of Grace has helped me get my life straightened out. It's helped me restore my relationship with my family, got my life right with the Lord. That's the most important thing," says Roberts.
"The men seem to enjoy it. They get a lot out of it," says Brown.
