"Everything will come out in court."

That was what Jeremy Martin said two years ago, just days after he was arrested for his father's murder. But what came out in court was two confessions, where Martin admitted to planning and killing with his father with the help of Richard Jacobs.

"I looked at Richard, and he look at me. I nodded my head up and down, like saying yes. He sort of raised the gun, and I plugged my ears with my figures and put my head down. Richard shot, and my dad's head pretty much exploded," Martin told investigators.

District attorney Keith Miller says that confession stuck with jurors.

"A confession makes it extremely difficult for defense attorney to defend," Miller said. "So absolutely, without those statements, we would not have had a case."

Martin's attorneys never denied Jeremy was involved with the fatal shooting. But said Jeremy's age and background was a big factor behind his actions.

"The first thing the we wanted the juror to realize is that we are dealing with some adolescence, the fact that he has been in several mental hospitals during most of his young life and he was on medication," defense attorney George Shaddock said.

The district attorney's office decided not to push for the death penalty after talking to family members who didn't want to deal with another loss.

"In this particular instance, the victim's family is also the defendant's family," Miller said.

The Martin family still has to cope with another murder trial. Later this year, Jeremy Martin's former girlfriend Crystal will face the same murder charges. In all, six different people have been charged in this murder case. The next trial is set for May.
