Three Moss Point police officers have been indicted in the death of Marcus Malone.

Malone, was found dead in a Moss Point Jail cell a few hours after he was arrested for a traffic violation.

Named in a Grand Jury indictment released today are Steve Strickler, Chris Weeks, and Derrick Welton. All three officers were present when Malone was arrested on McCall Street on the night of Sept. 14, 1999. The three officers are charged with manslaughter

Malone's death sparked outrage in the Moss Point community. Malone was black and the arresting officers are all white. The first autopsy found that 32-year-old Malone died of natural causes. That autopsy was presented to a grand jury last year, which later found no wrongdoing by the officers.

A second autopsy done at the family's request said the cause of death was strangulation. In May, District Attorney Keith Miller ordered a second grand jury to investigate Malone's death . Today's indictments came from that review of the case.
