DEER ISLAND, MS (WLOX) - A dead dolphin that washed up on Deer Island was found on Tuesday.

When the dolphin was spotted on the beach, its body was severely decomposed. It has since been removed from the area.

The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies' Dr. Moby Solangi believes the adult male dolphin died a "questionable death." Solangi noted that the dolphin had a full stomach, indicating he had just eaten and eating is a sign that the dolphin is usually in good health.

Solangi says a veterinarian did a field necropsy and they took tissue samples, which are on their way to Mississippi State for testing. That testing will determine how the dolphin died.

Since scientists found lots of shrimp and fish in the dolphin's stomach, they believe the dolphin was probably following a shrimp boat. Dr. Solangi says dolphins don't normally eat shrimp. No outward signs of human interaction were identified.
