OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The visitors' bleachers at the Greyhound Stadium in Ocean Springs are in dire need of an upgrade.

Ocean Springs High may have to accommodate visiting fans with temporary bleachers during the 2018 football and soccer seasons.

At a special called meeting Wednesday morning, school board members will be asked to spend up to $35,000 to rent bleachers. WLOX News has been told an engineer's report given to the school board says the seats on the visitors' side of the football stadium are unsafe.

According to school board member Brad Patano, the engineer recommended replacing the bleachers, saying it would be a cheaper alternative in the short term than making the repairs required to fortify the bleachers.

If the school board agrees to rent the bleachers, they won't arrive until August 13. The plan to get through any upcoming games is to borrow bleachers from a Mardi Gras krewe. For visitors who can't fit on those bleachers, Patano believes the home side of Greyhound Stadium should have seating available.

Ocean Springs had the engineer do an assessment of all bleachers at every sports complex. Patano said the Greyhound Stadium visitors' seats were considered a safety hazard.

For several months, the Ocean Springs school board has discussed what to do with Greyhound Stadium.

Board members hired an architect to develop plans that could be adopted. Patano said those drawings, and the costs associated with them, might be shared at next week's regularly scheduled school board meeting. He expects a decision to be made in September about whether to renovate Greyhound Stadium.

In the meantime, fans will be kept off the visitors' side bleachers throughout the 2018 football and soccer seasons.
