Gulfport city council gets Centennial Plaza update
GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Imagine a large pool with a lazy river near the planned Holiday Inn, a Vegas style water fountain, apartments and another boutique style hotel.
Those are just some of the amenities being kicked around for the old VA property on the beach in Gulfport.
The updated plan for Centennial Plaza is elaborate and aggressive. In addition to the lazy river, apartments and boutique hotel, a meeting area that could also be used for destination weddings is also planned, along with a unique fountain in the middle of it all.
"For me, the biggest thing is there's a fountain they're going to be putting in the center courtyard, a mini-version of what they have at the Bellagio,' said Billy Hewes, Gulfport mayor. "The big draw for families is that swimming pool they've talked about is now going to be a lazy river, almost a water park unto itself."
Meanwhile, work feverishly continues at the property with the hope that this will be in place and ready to go sometime next year. The Gulfport Redevelopment Commission has approved the plans. Hewes says the next step is city council's vote on whether this concept will become a reality.
"It's the work of a lot of people over a lot of years to have things come together," Hewes added. "Nothing happens over-night and there's nothing easy about it, but it is worthwhile and so this is what we had hoped."
