UPDATE: Man accused of killing wife captured in Utah after two weeks on the run

PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Charles Bowman is set to be back in court on August 1. Officials say they hope to get extradition papers signed during this court appearance. Bowman requested a hearing to talk with his counsel for July 30.

Bowman was captured for the murder of his wife after he fled across the country.

Authorities say Charles Bowman was arrested Thursday in Utah, two hours north of Salt Lake City. Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison tells WLOX that Bowman was found at a campground.

U.S. Marshals had been looking for 61-year-old Bowman since the end of June when Kathleen Bowman's skeletal remains were found on the couple's property.

U.S. Marshals told a Utah newspaper that Bowman was spotted at a campground on the east side of Bear Lake Thursday afternoon, prompting them to call in the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Bear Lake is a state park on the Utah/Idaho border.

State park officers held back and kept an eye on Bowman until the strike team arrived, U.S. Marshal Matthew Harris told the newspaper. Authorities say the state park officers were careful to move other campers away from Bowman without him noticing. One the strike team arrived, he was taken into custody without incident.

"We have the best fugitive hunters in the entire world, so you can't hide from us. You can run, but you can't hide," Harris told The Deseret News.

Pearl River County investigators say Bowman had a handgun at his campsite but it wasn't on him at the time of his arrest. The fugitive was still driving the white Nissan Maxima he left Mississippi in and had a tent and other camping gear with him, said PRC investigator Marc Ogden.

"The Pearl River County Sheriff's Department wants to thank the U.S. Marshals for an outstanding job tracking him all these days and taking him into custody. They did a fantastic job," Ogden said.

Kathleen Bowman's remains were discovered after the sheriff's department received a call from concerned family members saying they had not heard from her since Mother's Day. Deputies went to the home on Owl Hoot Road to do a welfare check, but only found her husband there. They returned later with a search warrant for the home, but Charles Bowman was gone. That's when authorities found Kathleen's remains.

Charles Bowman is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife. Ogden said he is being held by Davis County, UT authorities but it's unclear yet how long it will take to get him back to Pearl River County. It depends on whether he fights extradition or not, says Ogden, adding that if Bowman does choose to fight extradition, the process will take much longer.
