WASHINGTON, DC (WLOX) - U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker wants more ships for the Navy, and that could mean more contracts for shipbuilders here on the coast.

Wicker teamed up with a Virginia Congressman to introduce the SHIPS Act, which would increase the size of the Navy's fleet. There are currently 276 vessels, but Wicker hopes to make it policy to reach the Navy's minimum requirement of 355 ships.

Wicker says national security concerns overseas are the driving force behind the bill.

"We are serious about giving the Navy, the defense department, the chief of naval operations, the support that they need to achieve this ambitious step," said Wicker.

Officials say it could take 20 to 25 years to build the 79 ships needed to reach Wicker's goal.
