HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Harrison County Sheriff's Department held a badge ceremony Wednesday afternoon to recognize the changing of the old badges.
Sheriff Larkin Smith brought the former "6-star" badge in from Pearl River County in 1984.
The new badge was paid for with drug forfeiture money. Former badges cost about $87 each, and the new ones cost about $56 each.
"It's what I talked about when I ran for sheriff. It's what I wanted was change. This is a positive change for the sheriff's department and a positive change for the community. So it brings new life into the community. Some people don't realize it but something as simple as a badge changes everybody," Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson said.
Approximately 190 people at the department will be wearing the new, patented badges.
