Training seminar teaches police how to deal with transgender community
LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - History was made today on the campus of USM Gulf Park in Long Beach. A law enforcement training seminar was held dealing strictly with the LGBT community.
The training was cosponsored by the U.S. Attorney's Office, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the USM Alliance for Equality.
About 50 police officers from across the state attended the seminar. They are learning about how to deal with the transgender community, recognizing such things as hate crimes and discrimination.
In fact, several of the speakers and presenters at the seminar are members of the transgender community. They say the seminar is a way to open eyes and minds when it comes to dealing with a different lifestyle.
Many of the speakers say they have been victims of discrimination and even hateful actions. They say the goal of this event is to make sure those who serve and protect do so for everyone on an equal basis.
Doug Walker is covering the story and will have more later today on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
