Lookouts and Shuckers open Southern League finals having split 8 games this season
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Shuckers manager Carlos Subero and his South Division champs are three wins away from reaching the top of the mountain.
Biloxi baseball fans should be excited with games one and two set for MGM Park beginning at 7:10 Wednesday and Thursday night.
Jorge Lopez, the Southern League Pitcher of the Year, has been keeping the oppositions bats silent and he'll try to lead the Shuckers to a "W" Wednesday night. Biloxi pitching coach Chris Hook says Lopez stepped up on the mound...big time this season.
"We knew that he was a very talented young man and he just hadn't put it together yet, "stated Hook. "As you come into Double-A level you just don't know how you're going to do and I think early in the season he had a couple of outings where he wasn't sure of himself and he had one big outing. To me I point to the outing in Jackson where he threw five shutout innings. It kind of clicked for him. Hey, I believe I could be a big leaguer. I believe I'm the best pitcher in the Southern League."
Following the first two games in Biloxi, the Shuckers and Lookouts will have a travel day on Friday, destination Chattanooga. Game 3 is set for AT&T Field 7:15 Saturday night. Game 4 will be played at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. If needed, the fifth and final deciding game for the Southern League Championship would be played Monday night at 7:15 in Chattanooga.
How did the Shuckers fare against the Lookouts during the regular season? The teams split 8 games with Chattanooga winning 3 of 4 in Biloxi in July and the Shuckers won 3 of 4 at Chattanooga in May.
Over the past 10 years, the South Division champ has beaten the North Division champ for the league title 9 times. That bodes well for the Shuckers.
Let's pack MGM Park on Wednesday and Thursday and give the Shuckers a true home field advantage.
Playoff tickets are still available.
