GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Today is Saint Joseph's Day. In the Catholic church, that means feasts are prepared to honor the Italian saint.

According to legend, during a famine centuries ago, the people of Italy prayed to Joseph for rain during a severe drought and the rain came. Since then, Catholics have prepared altars with elaborate loaves of bread and Italian cookies in honor of the saint.

The Ladies' Guild at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gulfport prepared the altar for this year.

The altar will be open to the public for viewing following an 8 a.m. mass. You can stop by to see the St. Joseph altar until 1 p.m. Non-perishable food and monetary donations will be collected for the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

The church is located at 12290 Depew Road in Gulfport.
