GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - As WLOX News first reported last week, Governor Phil Bryant unveiled a new initiative to help boost the oyster industry in Mississippi. Monday, he announced the formation of the Governor's Oyster Council.
Coast businessman Dave Dennis was named chairman of the new council. He said the goal is to reach an annual harvest of one million sacks a year by 2025.
Governor Bryant called oysters the "soybean of the sea." He said there's a tremendous demand for oysters and Mississippi is poised to become a leader in the harvest and marketing of gulf oysters.
