Fishing season for commercial red drum opens New Year's Day

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Commercial fishermen can welcome the new year with the opening of Red drum fishing season. On January 1, 2015 Red drum season opens for commercial fishermen at 12:01 a.m. with a commercial quota of  50,000 pounds.

The Department of Marine Resources or (DMR) will close that season once that quota is met. Commercial Seatrout season opens at 12:01 a.m. February 1, 2015. The commercial quota for seatrout is 50,000 pounds, but is split into two 4 month seasons.

From February to May the first season opens. If the 25,000 quota is met, the season will close and then reopen June 1.

If the 25,000 quota is not met, the remaining quota will be added to the second season. The second season will end once the quota is reached. But, it will not go on past the end of September, whether or not the quota is met.
