OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - It's news that will bring a smile to the face of most anyone who has ever called Ocean Springs home: Lovelace Drugs is staying open!
Last week, we told you that Fred's had sold the pharmaceutical side of the business to CVS, and transferred all current prescriptions to the Bienville Boulevard CVS location. Left in limbo was the rest of the business, including the popular soda fountain.
Friday, Fred's announced its intention to continue operating a drug store out of the historic building at 801 Washington Avenue. The business will keep the original Lovelace name, sell over-the-counter medications and other products, and continue to operate the soda fountain.
"We realize the importance of the historic Lovelace storefront and we appreciate the sense of nostalgia our customers have for this iconic downtown business," said Dave Mueller, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Fred's Super Dollar.
Lovelace will continue regular operations, and all current team members have been offered positions to remain with the store if they choose, Mueller said.
"Lovelace is an integral part of Ocean Springs and we plan to uphold that tradition of excellence," Mueller said. "We're honored to be able to serve the people of this community."
As a show of appreciation to its customers, or perhaps a peace offering for worrying so many with rumors of closing, Lovelace will offer their famous milkshakes for half price from August 4 through Labor Day.
"We thought this would be a nice treat for our customers," Mueller said.
Again, all prescriptions are still moving to CVS. So if you need something stronger than a milkshake or an Advil, you'll want to visit the CVS pharmacy on Bienville Boulevard. Current Lovelace customers' prescriptions have already been transferred.
