Mississippi Rollergirls say goodbye to county skate facility

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Since 2006, the Harrison County Skate Park on DeBuys Road has been known as the home of the Mississippi Rollergirls. The team uses the facility to practice their roller derby skills and host their home games. The team's vice-president and captain said getting the news that they have to relocate for the rest of their season came as a surprise.

"I wish we would have had more notice to make arrangements, but it is what it is. This is what's happening and we're not going to let it get us down," Vice President Ashley Adams said.

"We're not happy about it. We'd love to be able to stay here, but we're going to move on and find somewhere else and try to be involved in a new community, and just keep playing our game," Team Captain Holly Bribwell said.

According to the Harrison County Board of Supervisors, the skate park is costing the county thousands of dollars a month, and isn't generating enough revenue. The county is now negotiating with a company to convert the property into a sound stage, forcing the Rollergirls to relocate.

But team members are optimistic about finding a new home where they can create new memories.

"I think we have a strong will, so where there's a will, there's a way. We will make sure that we continue to train. We will find somewhere, even it it's outside in parking lots for the time being," Adams said.

"Our team is still going to be the same, it's just going to be in a new building. We'll be alright. We'll still be the people we are," Bribwell said.

Adams said the team is currently in the process of looking for a new facility, and they're hoping the public can help. If you know of any vacant buildings where they could skate, they ask that you contact the team through their website: http://www.mississippirollergirls.com/MSRG/Contact.html
