JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - Lawmakers in the Mississippi Senate and House agree: The Department of Marine Resources needs to be reorganized. This after the corruption that has been uncovered at the agency in recent months. Tuesday, both chambers passed a bill aimed at reform.
The DMR Accountability and Reorganization Act was written by state Senator Brice Wiggins of Pascagoula. One provision of the proposed law would require an annual audit of the DMR, paid for by the agency.
Wiggins told WLOX News "While only time and good management will fix all the issues at DMR, this law, coupled with the reforms begun by Director Miller, should begin to restore confidence and integrity in the agency statewide."
The bill now awaits Governor Bryant's signature.
