Developer to unveil plans for Biloxi theme park Tuesday
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A developer has big plans for a big piece of property in Biloxi. He wants to build a theme park near the intersection of Highways 15 and 67.
Developer Glen Miller has a vision for the 1200 acres he owns there. Not just a theme park, but also a retail development and future hotel projects.
Biloxi's community development director is excited about Miller's plans. Situated near the intersection of Highways 15 and 67 and the interstate, it offers easy access and is considered prime for future development.
"He wants to put a theme park in the area. Right now, phase one would encompass a 144 acre theme park. He has what is called a Trader Village, which is a 1500 tenant outlet mall. Plus the lower part of the property is predominately wetlands. Even though he can't build any buildings on the wetlands, he's proposing to build an outdoor amphitheater," said Biloxi Community Development Director Jerry Creel.
And that's all in the phase one. Developer Miller told the planning commission he's also identified five hotel sites on the property.
"Just he alone owns over 1200 acres. And he's got room to start and room to expand. We believe it's located in probably one of the best locations it could be," said Creel.
Developer Miller has owned this 1200 acres since 2007. He told the Biloxi Planning Commission he's still working on financing and is close to getting some equity partners to help with the proposed development.
The proposed theme park would cover 140 acres and have a musical theme. The tentative name for the project is "Mississippi Sound."
"We're excited about it. We've been pushing family entertainment, trying to do something to bring family oriented entertainment to the coast. And I think this would be a major step in that direction," said Creel.
