MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - A Jones County public defender was arrested Friday night at a DUI checkpoint in Moss Point.
Michael Duane Mitchell is charged with felony possession of marijuana. He was released Monday after posting a $2,500 bond.
Mitchell, 38, is a public defender in Laurel. He was stopped on Highway 63 near Mississippi Power's Plant Daniel.
Investigators said he had more than 30 grams of marijuana and two firearms on him when he was arrested. The drugs and firearms were seized by agents with the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson County.
If convicted, Mitchell faces up to three years in prison and a $3,000 fine.
The safety checkpoint was part of a routine operation that deputies conduct periodically throughout Jackson County.
