Devin Booker is following in his dad's footsteps at Moss Point High School
Devin Booker has become one of the most highly sought-after high school basketball players in the country and he's only a junior. The 6-foot-5 Booker is ripping the nets from all over the court, netting 28.9 points per game.
On any given weekday in the Moss Point gym, Devin can be seen, getting in some one-on-one practice time with his dad, Melvin Booker.
Coach Booker is the Tigers assistant coach under head coach Micoe Cotton.
Booker said, "I've been around the game my whole life and I've always followed the game. Even when my dad was overseas I had a big brother and we always paid attention to basketball." He added, "I base my life on basketball, eat and sleep basketball."
Last season Devin left Michigan and enrolled at Moss Point High School, following in his dads basketball footsteps.
Melvin Booker admitted, "It's exciting to get to work with my son and to help him through the process of getting better as a player, as a person, as a young man and to go through this recruiting process with him."
Melvin Booker graduated from Moss Point in 1990 and became a high school All-American, netting 28 points per game. He inked a college scholarship with Missouri.
While Devin is only a junior, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Ole Miss, LSU and Alabama are just a few of the schools that have zeroed in on Devin's basketball talents. Most recently Duke got involved.
"Growing up it was Duke,Duke, Duke and now to get a call from coach K, there's no words for it," Booked stated. He said, "I don't know what to say."
Melvin Booker said he won't pressure his son to sign with Missouri, "It's open for him to decide. We're looking at the best situation for Devin."
He stated, "If Missouri is the best situation for him that's where he would decide but right now it's wide open and he's still taking offers right now."
Moss Point head coach Micoe Cotton says Devin is the most talented player he's ever coached.
Cotton said, "He's two, three steps ahead of the other guy and it helps that he can shoot really well. He's an unselfish player . He doesn't mind getting his teammates involved."
Are there any basketball comparisons between Devin and Melvin Booker?
Melvin Booker said,"He shoots the ball a lot better than I did at this same age. He's much bigger than I was at the same age . I was a lot quicker than he was. But he's a great player. We're working everyday to make him better."
Tuesday night Booker and his Tiger teammates dropped a 43-41 decision to arch rival Pascagoula. Booker scored 28 of his teams 41 points.
