Buccaneer Bay Water Park Ready For Summer

When Buccaneer Bay Water Park in Waveland officially opens for business this weekend return customers will notice a new look. The water park recently underwent a $244,000 renovation project which included painting, tiling and resurfacing the entire floor of the Wave Pool.

"We tore up all the fiberglass bottom and put down a plaster bottom a diamond bright plaster. It really enhances the beauty of the Wave Pool. I think the visitor that swims in the pool will notice a difference because the bottom is a lot smoother, it's easier on the feet, it just looks better," Park Manager Stu Rayburn said.

Park officials hope upgrades to their water slide make a big splash with guests.

"We've replaced all the joints with new caulking new jell coast so it's a much smoother ride right now," Rayburn said.

The park's 21 year old concession stand and office building are also getting a facelift.

"We've done a $244,000 cosmetic improvement, and I think that appearance is everything. When they come in, they'll get a new look. It's the same park, but a new look and a cleaner appearance," Park Assist Manager Joel Duncan said.

Buccaneer State Park is also a popular place to set up a temporary homestead. The park has more than 400 primitive and developed camp sites.

"Sometime in July we're going to start another project and that's paving the entire park. So that's going to be a big improvement over our camp ground," Rayburn said.

Buccaneer State park is considered a major tourist attraction drawing nearly a half million visitors every year.

"During the summer time, Buccaneer State Park is among the top two or three busiest parks in the state park system and the water park is a lot of that draw," Hancock County Tourism Bureau Director Beth Carriere said.

She says improvements made at the park should attract even more visitors.

Buccaneer Bay Water Park will open for the summer season this Saturday morning. It will be open seven days a week until mid August.
