HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - State Health Department officials confirm they are looking into the death of a 13-year-old girl who attended Hancock Middle School. The child died Thursday.

E-mails and phone calls to WLOX News indicated the girl may have been suffering from flu-like symptoms, but that has not been confirmed. An autopsy has been ordered to determine why she died.

When asked about the child's symptoms, Hancock County Coroner Norma Stiglet told the Associated Press, "We just don't know. We're waiting for results from the lab work. We need to find out exactly what caused her to pass away."

Also, rumors of large numbers of students pulling out of the school are untrue, according to School Superintendent Alan Dedeaux. He said Thursday's attendance was at a normal level.
