PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) - This week is Environmental Services Week. At Singing River’s Pascagoula Hospital, one employee stands out for his unwavering effort and heart.

For eight years, Ken Sparks has shown up to work rain or shine. Sparks’ dedication to his position as an Environmental Services Trash Tech at Singing River even earned him the nickname “Superman.”

“The first title I earned was the hardest working man in Singing River, but two years ago I had a particularly busy day,” Sparks said. “I was going from corner to corner, hall to hall, and the supervisor said you’ve been flying around this building like Superman, and she kept calling me Superman, and then it started spreading across Singing River.”

Singing River Unit Clerk Grana Williams shared how Sparks goes above and beyond for the hospital and its patients.

“Superman... yes and he is exactly that. He is so great and he is a blessed man and I really love him... We need a bed moved around [and] he’s going to do that for us so we just love him. The whole yard loves Ken,” Williams said.

According to Sparks, people at the hospital notice his dedication and ask how he maintains the effort.

“I like the joke ‘you want to know the secret to my super powers,’ and they’ll say ‘yeah we do,’ and I’ll say ‘I don’t know it’s a secret to me too,’” Sparks said.

Sparks said he helps with anything the ICU or ER needs.

“Taking care of a property and the people that dwell within it that drives me,” Sparks said. “Everybody that needs something calls me.”
