GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - The city of Gulfport is working towards the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box, which would be the third in Mississippi.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, the board approved donated funds and services from one local family, as Gulfport resident Gerald Sanchez is donating $24,000 for construction and materials.

The Safe Haven Baby Box is set to be located at Fire Station 9 on Dedeaux Road.

In the event of a surrender, EMTs and fire crews will provide assistance to all children and help transition them to the next level of care.

Sanchez is happy to partner with the city and give a child another fighting chance at life.

“By the time they clean it up and have everything set up, they put that little one in there and they are given a chance,” Sanchez said.

“Firefighters and the paramedics will take that little one to the ER and check it out. They give mothers a 45-day window if they decide to change their mind and want their baby back. If not, the child is put up for adoption to a family that wants a child but can’t have a child.”

Gulfport will announce an installation date for the Safe Haven Baby Box soon.
