Police find homemade gun during fatal Picayune traffic stop

PICAYUNE, Miss. (WLOX) - Authorities are investigating a suspicious package after a man reportedly shot himself during a Picayune traffic stop.

Around 4:39 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11 near Mitchell Street.

Police Chief Joe Quave said that the driver shot himself before the officer approached.

While responding to the scene, officers found a suspicious package. Authorities cleared the area and called for assistance from the Biloxi bomb squad.

The package turned out to be a homemade gun made from a pipe.

The driver, the only person in the vehicle, died as a result of his injuries.
