OXFORD, Miss. (WLOX) -With the basketball season winding down Ole Miss and Mississippi State took to the hardwood against each other one more time for the regular season.
Rivalry games very rarely need any extra encouragement and after a 64-46 loss at the hands of Ole Miss earlier in the season, Mississippi State was looking for revenge.
By the end of the game, they got just that with a 66-56 victory.
With State’s NCAA tournament hopes mostly gone and Ole Miss controlling its own destiny; last night’s loss may have more implications down the line for the Rebels.
”I couldn’t warn them anymore on how desperate Mississippi State was going to be,” said Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis. “They’d lost some games and played well in some losses on the road. I knew what kind of game it would be. We were no shocked. We didn’t have our best edge and we didn’t play like a team that was chasing the bubble tonight.
”It’s a big deal and I thought our guys really responded well, starting at the defensive end of the floor because that’s where it’s always got to start. I thought that’s what they did to us at our place,” said Mississippi State head coach Ben Howland. “I’m just happy we were able to come in, we were on a bad slide as you know and we needed this one to get us some momentum as we go into the last four games.”
State and Ole Miss both back on the court this week.
