PERKNISTON, Miss. (WLOX) -After the resignation of Mississippi Gulf Coast softball coach Eric Neel, the softball team found itself with an active coach on its staff.

Sunday Gulf Coast officials announced a familiar face as the replacement for now.

Kenneth Long will return to serve as the interim coach for the Bulldogs after retiring in 2019.

He’s joined by St. Martin High School and South Alabama alum Katelyn Gruich as an interim assistant coach.

Former Southern Miss pitcher Shelbee Sowders will serve as an interim pitching coach as well.

Long was inducted into the Mississippi Gulf Coast Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020 and coached at Gulf Coast for 18 seasons.

He was in charge for all but two seasons of Bulldog fast-pitch softball since the team was created and amassed a 584-232 record in his time there.

Bulldogs take on LSU-Eunice Wednesday.
