MOSS POINT, Miss. (WLOX) - One person is dead and a homeowner is injured after a shootout in Moss Point on Sunday evening.
Police said they received calls of shots being fired around 6:30 p.m. in the Mill Avenue area on Washington Boulevard, which is on the east side of town near the Kreole community.
When officers arrived, they found a man lying in the road dead from apparent gunshot wounds. He was later identified as Kijuan Dukes, 20, of Natchez.
Investigators said that Dukes and another man attempted to carry out an armed home invasion of a house in the area. When the two men approached the home’s door, they encountered the homeowner.
According to police, at least one of the two suspects fired multiple times at the homeowner, striking him at least once. The homeowner returned fire, striking at least one of the two intruders.
It’s unclear whether or not the surviving suspect was under arrest at this time.
Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said Dukes’ body has been sent to the crime lab for an autopsy.
The homeowner was treated and released from the hospital for his gunshot wounds. This case will be presented to the next Grand Jury for their review to determine if charges should be filed against the homeowner.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
