GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Walmart’s Neighborhood Market location on Hwy 49 will close Friday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. to thoroughly clean and sanitize the building. The store will remain closed all day Saturday, and reopen to customers Sunday, Jan. 10, at 7 a.m.
It’s not uncommon for businesses to close for deep cleaning when employees test positive for COVID-19, but Walmart isn’t citing a specific reason for this cleaning. Other Walmart locations around the country have closed under the same protocol, but no other stores in South Mississippi are set to close at this time.
“Everything we’re doing is for the well-being of our associates and customers, and in consideration of guidance by the Centers for Disease Control and health experts. When the store reopens Sunday, we will continue conducting associate health screens and temperature checks, and all associates will be provided with facemasks and gloves,” read a statement from Walmart.
Walmart officials said the deep cleaning is in addition to other measures put in place during the pandemic to help protect their associates and customers, including installing sneeze guards at registers, temperature checks and mandatory mask-wearing for associates, placing social distancing signage and enacting emergency leave policy for associates who are unable or uncomfortable coming to work.
“Additionally, through the help of our health ambassadors, we will continue requiring customers to wear protective facial coverings while inside the building.”
