Miss. legislators respond to violence at U.S. Capitol

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Most members of Congress condemned the protests in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, saying it’s a day in history they never wanted to see.

That includes those who were opposed and objected to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

Mississippi legislators have expressed their feelings about the violence that erupted at the U.S. Capitol.

U.S. Congressman Bennie Thompson released this statement, “It is domestic terrorism and armed insurrection. This possibly would not have happened if Senate Republicans stepped up to the plate and removed their despicable leader. He needs to just leave and never come back. Trump fed this monster with his vile and dangerous talk. As a country, it is time to accept that Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States of America and move on.”

U.S. Congressman Steven Palazzo said he was disheartened by the events and hopes to see those responsible punished.

“99.9% of the people that were here to voice their frustrations, to protest, or be here to support the President of the United States, were here in peace. They just wanted their voices heard,” Congressman Steven Palazzo said.”It was that 1%, that micro 1% that came prepared to destroy and create chaos. I hope they are identified and I hope they are prosecuted to the greatest extent of the law.”

Now when it comes to the presidential election results, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker voted in favor of accepting the electoral votes in Arizona, but U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith was one of six Senators to object to the election results.

In a statement, Senator Hyde-Smith said, “The people I represent do not believe the presidential election was constitutional and cannot accept the Electoral College decision; therefore, I cannot in good conscience support certification.”
