GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Another huge South Mississippi Mardi Gras krewe will not roll in 2021. The Krewe of Gemini announced Monday they are canceling both their day and night parades in Gulfport for the 2021 carnival season.
Krewe officers met with Mayor Billy Hewes Monday morning to talk about the decision. As a result, the City of Gulfport will not host any Mardi Gras events this year.
“The widespread impacts of COVID-19 continue to require unprecedented action, and difficult decisions,” Mayor Hewes said. “The reality is that vaccinations may not be universally available until well into Spring and combined with the current rapid spread of the virus, this outcome is necessary. The Krewe of Gemini is in agreement, and will keep options open for the possibility of a Mardi Gras observance during the Summer season.”
Gulfport officials ask that residents continue to follow the CDC guidelines of wearing masks, social distancing and not gathering in large groups.
