BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - During this time in the pandemic, we’re also entering the peak of flu season. Health officials have been encouraging people to not put their flu shots on the back burner. Coastal Family Health is working to remind people of the importance of preventative measures.
“It’s very easy during these times to think the only element we can get is COVID,” said Marcie Walton, Coastal Family Health practice manager.
With cones set up, Coastal Family Health was on the road, set up outside Edgewater Mall Monday offering free flu shots. With many people anxious to get the COVID-19 vaccine, staff said now is not the time to forget about other things you can possibly get, one being the flu.
“A lot of sick that we see is the flu sometimes and has nothing to do with COVID at all,” Walton said. “Unfortunately they have some of the same symptoms, so it’s still just as important.”
Margaret Shippee believes in annual vaccinations to avoid sickness at all costs.
“I usually get the flu shot every year. This year I tend to have put it off,” Shippee said.
Shippee didn’t put off getting the flu shot much longer, getting vaccinated on Monday. When the COVID-19 vaccine is available for the general public, Shippee said she will then get that vaccine.
“I feel the COVID vaccine is like getting a flu shot,” Shippee said. “It’s something we need to do for our health.”
Coastal Family Health said flu shots are still available at surrounding clinics and it’s free with no out of pocket cost. Insurance is not required.
