GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Cheryl Brown likes to play scratch offs, but she’s been working the lottery even more during this pandemic year.
“Yes. Normally, it was more just like a random every once in a blue moon,” said Brown. “But anytime I actually have cash and I have to stop at the store, I’m nine times out of 10 going to be buying at least a couple of scratch offs.”
But Mega Millions at $401 million for Friday’s draw has her attention.
“OK, I may just try for that,” Brown said with a laugh. “I had seen someone recently won $200,000 in Mississippi. So, I was like why not just keep trying for it? We just bought a house, so, it would be great to pay it off.”
And it seems to have gotten the attention of others as well. Fayard’s at Canal Road in Gulfport has been selling lottery tickets for only about three months, and business is picking up.
“A lady just walked out of here, bought $150 worth a few minutes ago,” said owner Keith Fayard. “So, they’re hoping that 2021 is going to be better.”
In fact, Fayard and co-owner Steve Wilson are customers themselves.
“”I think he buys 10 weeks of tickets for us,” Fayard said.
And should they win?
“I’d pay off a lot of debt,” said Wilson.
Fayard added “I’d up the price on our golfing buddies a little bit. We’re playing for more.”
But even the money a lottery win could bring, wouldn’t be enough to get them to sell out.
“Oh, no. We have fun here,” Fayard said. “Great location with our liquor store. And, we’ve got a pharmacy coming in here this month. So, we’ve got a great location with some great businesses here. And it’s been phenomenal in the pandemic. Our businesses have been unbelievably good.”
But, in addition to thanking their customers, Wilson also said something special for his customers.
“I tell them they need to split it with me if they win.” said Wilson.
