OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) - 200 bags of turkeys, mashed potatoes, macaroni and other holiday foods left the Ryan Youth Center with families who are in need.
The drive-thru distribution site was organized by members of Alpha Phi Alpha, the Distinguished Gentlemen of Ocean Springs and Krewe Unique.
“All three organizations felt there was a need with COVID-19 to give back to the community,” said Greg Gipson, member of Krewe Unique and event organizer.
The groups also carefully choose which families received the Thanksgiving goods.
“Each member had five needy families that we decided to give away to,” said Julius Grady, member of the Distinguished Gentlemen of Ocean Springs.
Members said they enjoy giving back to the community for the Thanksgiving holiday, the fifth year in a row that they do so.
“It’s great. It feels really good,” said Grady. “It’s been a tough year for everyone involved.”
The goal was to make things easier for some families currently going through hardships. And while the groups look to help hundreds of people this year, they hope to impact even more in 2021.
“Every year we are looking to increase our number given to families,” said Gipson.
