BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - The body of a man found under the I-110 overpass early Friday morning is believed to have died following a car crash, said authorities.

William Lester IV of Gautier was found dead shortly after the crash, which happened at 3:30 a.m. on I-110 near the intersection of Highway 90.

When officers arrived at the scene of the crash, they found a vehicle that appeared to have run into a piling, said Harrison County Deputy Coroner Brian Switzer. The driver of the wrecked vehicle was not there, said police.

The body of 30-year-old Lester was found four hours later around 7:30 a.m. while someone was out for a morning walk.

Maj. Chris DeBack with Biloxi Police Department said the man was far enough away from the wreck that officers wouldn’t have found him while investigating the crash.

"It looks like he crossed over the I-110 median and was walking north and for some reason, he went over the side," said Switzer. "We don't know if he was disoriented or what or didn't realize the height but he fell."

Nothing from the wreck site indicated that the driver had went in the direction where he was found, said DeBack.

Lester died from blunt force trauma due to the fall.

"The area where he went over was much higher than where his vehicle wrecked in the southbound lanes," Switzer added.

Biloxi Police are investigating the death, which they said was an “unfortunate accident.” Lester’s body will be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard procedure.
