GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast awarded an $18.9 million firm-fixed-priced multiple award construction contract for the design and construction of an Expeditionary Combat Skills student berthing at Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport.
The multi-story building will replace the current barracks and will provide students an upgrade in living facilities.
“This new construction will not only fulfill a critical need for suitable living accommodations for our students attending ECS, but it will also provide much needed relief from a public works standpoint through a more efficient and modern facility that will require less trouble calls for repairs,” said Capt. William Whitmire, NCBC commanding officer.
The mission of ECS is to provide standardized common core combat skills to Seabees and sailors prior to their first Naval Expeditionary Combat Command or Naval Special Warfar Combat Support Unit tour of duty.
The building will comply with facilities criteria for Navy and Marine Corps unaccompanied housing and consists of 83 Naval Education and Training Command modules. Each module will include a semi-private sleeping room, two walk-in closets, small service area including micro/fridge, one lavatory, private toilet room and private shower stall with a dressing area, shared by two people
The building will feature sound attenuation and include a bachelor quarters administrative lobby, laundry facilities, vending mulitpurpose recreation rooms, housekeeping, storage, administrative spaces and utility rooms.
Work is expected to be complete by June 2021.
