St. Martin drop game one to Desoto Central of the MHSAA 6A Championship
PEARL, MS (WLOX) - In their first-ever state MHSAA 6A Championship series, the St. Martin Yellow Jackets (27-8) jumped out to an early start - like they have the past four playoff games - with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that would be their only run as Desoto Central (33-3) held St. Martin scoreless the rest of the way, ultimately taking game one 3-1.
After senior third baseman Brennen Study’s triple scored St. Martin’s lone run, the Yellow Jackets surrendered two runs to the Jaguars with a high fly ball from Dylan Hale in the bottom half. The ball dropped into center field in between three Yellow Jackets, senior shortstop Leo Harris being the closest of the bunch.
The game would remain scoreless until the sixth inning where Desoto Central added an insurance run with an RBI single by Alex Frillman to seal the victory.
St. Martin head coach Kary Bridges was asked postgame about the missed pop-up opportunity in the first inning that allowed the Jaguars to take the lead. Bridges said it was just a combination of bad luck and timing, but that it was also a difficult play to make.
“People at home watching and they think about baseball, they think that’s an easy play," Bridges told WLOX.
"When that balls high in a big field like this, outfielders are spread out, it’s different. So yeah, we would’ve like to have caught it but that’s not as easy a play as it looked. I’ve seen that play happen on the big league level and on down.”
Game two of the MHSAA 6A Championship series is set to take place Friday (May 17th) at 4 p.m. at Trustmark Park.
WLOX will be televising all MHSAA Baseball Championship games on Thursday and Friday. The games can be viewed on the WLOX Bounce channel (13.3) with games airing at 1, 4 and 7 p.m, including game two of St. Martin and Desoto Central.
