GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Despite the rainy start to Mother’s Day, it was still a busy day for Gulf Coast restaurants.
It was the first Mother’s Day for one of downtown Gulfport’s newest restaurants - Patio 44.
It didn’t disappoint. The restaurant bustled with families hoping to snag a table to treat mom to brunch.
“We opened at 10. We had a line out the door at 9:55, so we’re stoked," said general manager Tony Hill.
Jamie Farish caught a flight from New York at 4 a.m. to join his mom for brunch. He said every mile of the trip was worth it to show his appreciation for his mom.
“My mom raised two kids on her own, and she taught me responsibility, she taught me manners, she taught me how to treat people, she taught me kindness," Farish said.
There's no doubt mom was feeling the love.
“Oh my goodness, he’s my heart, and it’s just a pure joy to have him here," said Chris Forbes.
Rachel Gill was feeling it too as as her children and grandchildren showered her with love.
“I feel grateful and blessed. And thank you for all the compliments, and thank you for the love. I realize they do love me. They keep watch over me and take care of me," Gill said.
Her son and daughter said it was well-deserved.
“She’s always there willing to help and I thank her for that," said Pete Moran.
“We love you, mama," added Cheryl Dutruch.
Over at The Rackhouse, there was still no shortage of love for mom, even from the youngest diners.
“She’s so sweet, and kind,” said Madelyn of her mom.
“I love her when she gives me hugs,” said her sister, Mary-Aven.
The day was still special even for those who couldn't spend the day with their children.
“This is my sister, and we’re out celebrating Mother’s Day between the two of us. Our children live away. My son is in heaven,” said Ruby Cowart.
“We just came out to have breakfast together, and just spend a day, just relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.”
Although this one day in May is set aside to say thank you to the special women every where, people say every day is a day to show them love for all they do.
“We’ve been married 47 years this year," said Dennis Burke of his wife. “We grew up together with our children and learning how to be parents. She’s a special lady.”
“To all the women in my life, Happy Mother’s Day, and thanks for making the world a better place," Hill said.
