BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Three South Mississippi squad were just one win away from reaching the South State finals entering Friday, but the two remaining coast softball teams, Vancleave and Ocean Springs, began their South State Championship series in the confines of their home fields.
In the MHSAA 4A semifinals, Vancleave (28-3) scored three runs in the fourth inning and held on to capture a 4-2 victory in game one against Newton County (25-7) despite a late comeback effort from the Cougars. The same couldn’t be said for Ocean Springs (21-9) against Brandon (29-3) as the Greyhounds were run-ruled by the Bulldogs, 12-0, in six innings in game one of the MHSAA 6A semifinals.
In baseball, Biloxi (29-3) punched their ticket for the 6A South State Championship, surviving a shootout in Brandon (23-9) with an 18-15 victory. Indians will now await the winner of St. Martin and Oak Grove at home next Thursday (May 9, 2019).
St. Stanislaus (25-8-1) didn’t want their season to end just yet, forcing a game three against Sumrall (29-5) with a 5-3 win Friday. The Rock-A-Chaws look to win the series at home Saturday (May 4th, 2019) at 2 p.m.
St. Martin (24-7) grab a 6-2 game two win at Oak Grove (22-8) to extend their third round series to a decisive rubber match Saturday back home at 7 p.m. Pearl River Central (22-11) fall to North Pike (16-10) 4-3 and will play game three in Carriere at 7 p.m. where the winner will advance to South State.
Resurrection (23-6) tried to close things out against Stringer (22-9), but the Red Devils win convincingly 12-2 on Friday night as both teams will decide the series in Pascagoula Saturday at 2 p.m.
Unfortunately, Picayune’s season comes to a close as West Jones (25-5) clinches a birth to the Class 5A semifinals beating the Maroon Tide (17-11) 12-2.
