PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of chickens were killed when a tractor-trailer carrying live birds overturned Thursday morning in Perry County.
Officials with Mississippi Highway Patrol said the crash happened on U.S. Highway 42 east of Richton just after 9 a.m. MHP spokesman Sgt. Travis Luck said the highway remained closed into the afternoon hours while crews worked to clear the scene.
Luck said the highway reopened for traffic at 2:30 p.m.
Perry County Emergency Management Agency Director Colby Prine said the 18-wheeler was the only vehicle involved in the crash, and the driver was taken to Forrest General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Prine did not have a number for how many chickens were killed when the truck overturned, but pictures from the scene show what appear to be hundreds of dead chickens littering the ground.
Prine said the chickens and truck belong to Mar-Jac Poultry, and representatives from the company are at the scene to collect the chickens.
