LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - After recommendation by Long Beach School District Superintendent, Dr. Jay Smith, Connor Douglas was named the new head varsity baseball coach at Long Beach High School.
“He is a class act, and he will be welcomed in the Long Beach community. His experience and love for coaching kids will be appreciated by myself, our school administration and our school board," said Dr. Smith. "He has been given complete control of the Bearcat baseball program grades 7-12. It was my job to hire a coach. It is now his job to coach, and I have zero interest in telling him how to do it.
Douglas spent the last seven years as the head varsity baseball coach at Warren Central High School in Vicksburg, where he won the division championship in 2015 and 2016. Prior to Douglas coaching that time, the team only had one winning season in the five years prior.
Douglas led Warren Central to playoff appearances each year he coached there from 2013 to 2019.
He was selected from 26 applicants who applied for the vacancy after Shane Rutledge resigned to accept an administrative position within the district.
“I was very pleased to have 26 high quality applicants, several of whom were already head coaches. Had we received 126 applications, Coach Douglas would have still been my selection,” said Dr. Smith.
Douglas was recognized as Coach of the Year in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the Vicksburg Post.
