GULF COAST, MS (WLOX) - Gaming revenue is up on the Gulf Coast, according to the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
The Gaming Commission released its annual report outlining gross monthly revenue for 2018.
For the year, local casinos grossed $1.24 billion. Strictly looking at dollars and cents, the 12 coast casinos had their best year in a decade. The last time they topped the $1.2 billion mark was in 2008.
Coast casinos also had their best December ever. The $108,430,957.58 total was the only time local casinos ever topped the $100 million mark in the last month of the year. That was an 8 percent jump from December 2017.
The yearly total is a 4 percent increase from 2017, possibly bolstered by the launch of sports betting. Sports books opened Aug. 1, last year. In the last five months of 2018, coast casinos revenues jumped 6.8 percent compared to last year. That five month jump is bigger than the 12 month jump.
