Saints game means big weekend for Coast sports betting

D’IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - With The New Orleans Saints hosting the NFC championship game Sunday, Coast casinos are bracing for plenty of sports betting action. Sports book operations are gearing up for a huge day, and bettors are looking at the numbers on the Saints game.

It’s was quiet Thursday morning around DraftKings at Scarlet Pearl Sportsbook, but that’s going to change.

“I’ll tell you what, there’s going to be a lot of action. We’re excited,” said Nico Sfanos, director of sports betting.

Sfanos echoed the thoughts of all casinos on the coast. With the AFC and NFC Championship games coming up Sunday and a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, sports books will be rocking and rolling.

Around South Mississippi at sports book operations, the New Orleans Saints are the team to bet on, hosting the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game in the Superdome. The Saints are favored in that game.

“The situation is this, we’re looking at a 3-point spread. It opened with New Orleans at 3 and a half. It’s now 3. We’re looking at an over and under at 56 and a half,” Sfanos said.

That 56 and a half over-under is interesting because when the Saints and Rams met in November, New Orleans won 45 to 35 as the two teams put 80 points on the board. The Saints are 3-point favorites primarily because they enjoy home field advantage in the Superdome.

While the weekend is going to be huge, Sfanos said overall, sports betting has exceeded all expectations since becoming legal in Mississippi last summer.

“All the casinos will tell you that the sports book has had a big influence on their revenue and getting people through the door,” Sfanos said.

Sfanos doesn’t expect the point spread in the Saints game to change between Thursday and kick off on Sunday.

The Saints and Rams game kickoff at 2:05 p.m. with the Chiefs and Patriots meeting in the late. The two winners will meet in the Super Bowl Feb. 3.
