PERKINSTON, MS (MGCCC) - Three Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures as Mississippi Gulf Coast opened the 2019 part of its schedule with an easy 72-51 win Saturday over Bishop State.

"For the first game back, we played well," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "We really need to get more intense on defense, getting back in the groove."

Kayla Simmons (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) had 15 points, Allison Martin (Fr., Edwards/Raymond) scored 14 and Daphane White (Fr., Gulfport/St. Martin) got 12 in her season debut.

Simmons and White led a dominant performance inside. The Lady Bulldogs scored 17 of their 20 first-quarter points either from the paint or at the line after getting fouled inside. They led 20-13 after 10 minutes and 35-26 at halftime.

"To me, we're the best team in the state inside," Adams said. "We really have to get our guards up to that level."

Gulf Coast (5-3) scored the last 14 points of the third quarter to put the game away.

Bishop State falls to 3-10.

White transferred from Mississippi State in the fall and was seeing her first action of the season.

"I think Daphane did well for her first game," Adams said. "She's been sitting out all semester. She was a little discouraged, but I told her she did well. She'll get back in the groove."

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Thursday when they resume MACJC South play at Copiah-Lincoln. Tipoff at Wesson is set for 5:30 p.m.
