GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - 'Tis the season for porch pirates!
The Gautier Police Department is asking for help to identify a man seen in surveillance video snatching packages from the porch of a home. In the video, the suspect runs up to the home’s front door, where multiple packages have been delivered, and grabs the boxes.
“This is the first one we have had this holiday season but it is something that we deal with yearly," said Detective Austin Langfitt.
He then takes off with the packages, running from the home towards Martin Bluff Road.
“They were delivered in the day, and they were left out over night," Langfitt said. "We try to encourage everyone that if you get a package delivered, try to get it in the home as quickly as possible.”
The packages were later found on Lima Drive, said police.
“Just the boxes were found,” Langfitt said. He said the homeowners were inside when their packages were nabbed.
With more packages being delivered during this time of year, Langfitt offered some tips for keeping porch pirates away.
“If you have a neighbor or someone you can talk to, maybe you know you’re going to be working late and ask them if they can bring the packages into their house," he said. “Security systems, as cheap as they’ve gotten these day, it makes sense to have a security system at your house. Security lights, they can be a deterrent. In this case, [security lights] didn’t deter the guy, but it can deter criminals."
Anyone with information that could help authorities identify the suspected porch pirate is asked to contact Gautier Police Department at 228-497-2486 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
