WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) - A handful of Walmart shoppers in Wiggins got a special holiday surprise Monday when a “Secret Santa” paid for their layaway items before Christmas.
"He paid off four layaway accounts and he also paid a grocery transaction up front," said Jamika Quinn, the store's assistant manager.
Whether you call him a "Secret Santa" or a "Good Samaritan", the man wanted to remain anonymous about his generosity. The total cost of his bill was about $300.
"He did it out of the kindness of his heart. He wanted to remind people of the reason for this season," said Quinn.
The only hint about the man's identity the employees would give is that he is a frequent customer who just came in and said he wanted to do a good deed for a few people.
“He didn’t know what was in either one [of the account transactions]. They were just random accounts that were chosen,” Quinn said.
Similar Walmart layaway payoffs have happened in the last couple days. Many of the “Secret Santas” turned out to be celebrities like Tyler Perry and Pelicans and Saints team owner Gayle Benson, and Kid Rock.
Jamika Quinn manages the layaway department and says that she and other store employees were talking about the good deeds, but never thought that one would happen at their store.
"For it to happen yesterday, it was a real enlightenment for our store to be the one chosen for a customer to come and do the good deed," said Quinn.
Another Secret Santa paid off $1000 worth of layaway accounts at the Pass Christian Walmart, adding to the generous holiday spirit of paying it forward.
The company-wide layaway period ended Dec. 10, but if customers were granted an extension on their purchases there still may be time for another person to pay it forward for them.
