GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The long-awaited end of a construction project more than a year in the making is finally reaching an end.
The $5 million project on Courthouse Road began work Wednesday morning on the final paving. Crews began the final layer of asphalt on Courthouse Road from Highway 90 to the railroad tracks. It is sort of in the homestretch now. It started at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the day.
This is the third and final step of a three-step process for asphalting. Steps one and two, which include scraping and grading, continue north of the tracks.
A final paving of asphalt from Highway 90 to Pass Road is expected to happen in about two weeks. There will still be some work on sidewalks after that but the road should be finished then.
As of Wednesday, Jay Bearden Construction, Inc., the company hired for the project, has been fined $130,000.
