SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Runners from all over are getting ready to take the streets of South Mississippi Sunday morning to participate in the Gulf Coast Marathon despite a rainy start to the weekend.
More than 600 runners will run the 26.2 mile course starting at 7 a.m.
The half marathon begins in Gulfport at the same time as the marathon.
Be mindful of traffic as the course runs the length of Highway 90 beginning at Henderson point and ending at MGM Park. The impact to traffic will begin at 6:45 a.m. at Henderson Point and Jones Park in Gulfport.
The outer eastbound lane of Highway 90 will be closed from the start of the marathon until the final runners pass through.
Both lanes of traffic will also be closed through Courthouse road until runners pass through. In Biloxi, the northbound entrance ramp will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until 2:00pm.
Law enforcement will be on the scene detouring traffic.
The Gulf Coast Marathon had to overcome a hiccup in 2017 after last year’s course ended up being shorter than the 26.2 mile marathon distance. This year, organizers made adjustments to make sure the race is the full distance.
The marathon is one of the several races that took place on the Coast this weekend.
